Your clearly marked trail to matrimony in the mountains.
Why Colorado? (Spoiler: Because Venues Are a Scam)
Let’s face it. Traditional weddings are a giant pain in the ass. You spend two years of your life arguing with your mother-in-law about chicken vs. fish options, only to drop $45,000 on a single day where you barely get to eat a damn thing. Here is my No Bullshit Guide to Getting Eloped in Colorado.
Forget all that.
You choose Colorado because you want the epic views without the epic headache. Here, you exchange vows in front of a massive, ancient mountain range instead of a mediocre ballroom with ugly carpet.
- Zero Drama: No seating charts for relatives who can’t get along.
- Massive Savings: More cash for a legendary honeymoon.
- Epic Photos: Jaw-dropping backdrops come entirely standard.
- Total Control: Wear hiking boots under your wedding outfit.

The Best Legal Perk: Self-Solemnization
Colorado is one of the few places on Earth where you can legally marry yourselves. This is called self-solemnization.
You do not need an officiant. You do not need a judge. You don’t even need a single witness.
It is just the two of you, the mountains, and a piece of paper. If you want to say your vows, enjoy a cold beverage, and sign the certificate on a rock, you can absolutely do that.

The Ultimate Loophole: Your Dog Can Sign It
No joke. Colorado allows your pet to be the official witness.
All you do is ink up your dog’s paw and stamp it directly onto the witness line of your marriage license. Your pup is now a legally recognized part of the American judicial system.
Try doing that in a traditional church.

Location Scouting (Without the Tourist Traps)
Don’t just search for “nice mountain in Colorado” and call it a day. You will end up surrounded by hundreds of tourists in matching vacation t-shirts.
Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP)
- The Vibe: Epic, classic, towering peaks.
- The Catch: Extremely strict rules. You must ONLY use designated ceremony sites.
- Permit Cost: $350. Process should be started about 12 months before your desired date!!
More info about exactly how the permitting process in RMNP goes, why its so intense and what we can do instead of going into the park for your ‘ceremony’. Find the blog here : https://jandjstudioco.com/should-you-elope-in-rocky-mountain-national-park/
San Juan Mountains (Ouray & Telluride)
- The Vibe: Switzerland on steroids. Jagged peaks and blue lakes.
- The Catch: It takes forever to drive there from the Denver airport.
- Pro Tip: Rent a high-clearance 4×4 vehicle unless you want to destroy the underside of your rental car.
Summit County (Breckenridge & Dillon)
- The Vibe: High alpine lakes and easily accessible mountain passes.
- The Catch: Ski traffic on Interstate 70 will make you want to scream.
- Pro Tip: Never drive up on a Friday afternoon or down on a Sunday evening.

The Seasons: Pick Your Poison
Colorado weather has severe trust issues. It can be 75 degrees and sunny at noon, and snowing sideways by 2:00 PM.
Spring (My personal favorite)
- The Reality: Not to hot, not too cold, not too crowded, the goldilocks of seasons, IMO.
- The Look: Sunny, but snow possibly still on the ground. temps are moderate to cold.
- Verdict: A total dream. As long as you are up for the possibility of muddy trails.
Summer (Wildfire & Lightning Season)
- The Reality: Gorgeous, green, and warm. Can border on too hot. Sunscreen required.
- The Danger: Afternoon thunderstorms are violent and frequent.
- Verdict: Plan your ceremony for sunrise to avoid getting caught in a storm.
Autumn (The Aspen Gold Rush)
- The Reality: Stunning colors changing everywhere.
- The Danger: Millions of tourists driving incredibly slow to look at leaves.
- Verdict: Stunning, but book everything a year in advance. Always more expensive.
Winter (The Cold Season)
- The Reality: A magical winter wonderland.
- The Danger: Frostbite is real. Prepare with waterproof boots and layers of warm clothes.
- Verdict: Epic photos, but buy plenty of hand warmers.
Altitude Sickness: Safety First
Denver sits at 5,280 feet. The mountains where you want to elope are likely between 9,000 and 12,000 feet.
If you fly in from sea level and immediately hike a mountain, you are likely to feel ill. That is not romantic.
The Golden Rules of Survival
- Hydrate: Drink double the water you think you need. Add hydration powder mixes!
- Acclimate: Sleep in Denver or a lower mountain town for 2 nights before heading up high.
- Alcohol Warning: One drink at 10,000 feet feels like three. Take it easy.
Packing Checklist: The Non-Negotiables
Leave the standard wedding checklist behind. You need gear, not centerpieces.
- The License: Don’t leave this in the hotel room.
- A Black Pen: The state will reject the license if you use blue ink. Seriously.
- Layers: Thermals, jackets, and windbreakers.
- Good Boots: Ditch the heels. Injuries ruin honeymoons.
- Snacks: Low blood sugar leads to arguments before you even marry.
The Step-by-Step Execution Plan
- Get the License: Visit any county clerk’s office in Colorado. Bring IDs and about $30.
- Drive to the Spot: Give yourself double the travel time because mountain roads are slow.
- Do the Thing: Say your vows, sign the paper, stamp the dog’s paw.
- Mail It Back: Return the completed license to the clerk within 63 days so it’s official.
- Celebrate: Go get burgers, tacos, or a fancy steak. You did it your way.
